Surphace was born from the musical vision of Charlie Roberts, who began crafting songs as a kid in small-town KS. From these humble beginnings emerged a distinctive Alternative-Rock sound that resonated with local fans, especially after the release of their self-titled album on July 1, 2002. The singles, "Closer," and “15 Minutes” gained traction, earning airplay on Wichita's Fly 92.7, kickstarting their live presence around Kansas.
In 2004, he spent two and a half days recording “NYC Session”, a four-song EP featuring the acoustic “Flaws,” which highlighted Charlie's multi-instrumental talent and emotional depth. Four years later he added Michael “Archie” Archibold on lead guitar, Travis Tennyson on bass, and Clayton Gossett on drums. Together they crafted and recorded the “Escapism” EP that included ”Triplitbit," a track defined by introspective lyrics and signature guitar melodies, cementing Surphace's place in the Alt-Rock scene.
Surphace's 2010 album, “I Dream, I Can’t”, marked another chapter with songs like the soulful "Lazy Crazy Daze” and the introspective "This is the Miracle”. The album dived into themes of identity and resilience, resonating deeply with fans. The album release at a Wichita art gallery added a local, indie touch to Surphace's rising acclaim.
After a decade of performing, the band took a hiatus, but made periodic solo returns to the stage, rekindling the energy that fans remembered. Charlie slowly continued with his acoustic work, culminating in the Guilty EP, not released until 2024 —a raw, personal exploration of self-discovery and demon hunting.
With a renewed creative spirit, Charlie has “reSurphaced,” bringing new acoustic remakes and unreleased tracks to life, marking a fresh chapter in their evolving sound. As Charlie shared on a recent podcast, “I'm looking forward to releasing new music and other unreleased tracks.”
